Odyssey of the Id
Introduction
~~~
Odyssey of the Id revolves around the crew of the Independent Star Ship Id (I. S. S. Id), covering most of their adult lives. The story leads the interested reader through their many trials and tribulations. It invites you to watch, even “ride along” in the adventure as these characters grow and develop, often changing their worldview along the way—just as in real life.
You’ll undoubtedly have a favorite character or two, and just as likely will find a couple you do not like. Again, that’s just the way life is. And it is very much the author’s intent to make this story as true to life as possible.
Of course the setting offers some challenges to that goal. The story is, after all science fiction. But allow the premise a chance to intrigue you then step into the role of your favorite character as the story develops. You may at some point catch yourself asking the question, “If this were really happening, is that what I would do?” If so then it won’t really matter what your answer might be. You’re in!
In as much as the story revolves around the whole crew of the Id and a few others, it is primarily told from the perspective of the two central characters: a man and a woman. They frequently speak in the first person in many places throughout the series. Far less often, a few of the other characters do as well. But most of the story is a third person narrative.
Each book will introduce new mysteries. Sometimes a mystery will get solved within the same book, often not. But by the time the series is complete, the story will have answered all such questions—except for one. I’ll leave it to you to figure out which one that is.
~
Finally, as I pointed out above, the story covers the lives of a group of people. It is not really possible to pin down the time frame to any specific period, such as a decade, a century, etc. That is in part because in the telling of the tale, they cross literally billions of years together, though of course, they do not experience the passing of that much time.
To further complicate matters, they do not each experience the passing of time exactly the same. Think time dilation if you just want to look it up before hand. Yes, physics is involved. But don’t let that frighten you off. Where the reader needs some explanation, I give it, pretty much in plain English. Of course, for those readers who do like to play with the math, I provide enough detail for you work the calculations.
Just remember—it is science fiction.
The “Epochs”
~
epoch: (U. S. ep-uh k, Brit. ee-pok)
noun
1. Era;
a. A particular period of history, especially one considered remarkable or noteworthy.
b. A notable event that marks the beginning of such a period. See Synonyms at period.
2. A unit of geologic time that is a division of a period.
3. Astronomy: An instant in time that is arbitrarily selected as a point of reference.
~
In the Introduction I said we could not pin down the time frame of the story to a specific period such as decades, centuries, etc. For that reason, I cannot break the story into nice, fixed units. I cannot for example say that books one through three are in the Century of the Crusaders. The period of time covered is not a fixed unit. Nor are any of the other sections of the story.
Also (there’s always an “also”), the individual books do not lend themselves well to chronological arrangement. For one thing, their eras overlap. They are not themselves chronological. As an example, book four is about the events that took place between books one and two. But because of the nature of those events, I cannot present that part of the story chronologically.
Odyssey of the Id does have three distinct eras or periods. The story begins with a young man setting out to save the world. That is the premise behind the first book. Books two and three are continuations of that part of the story—the whole “save the world” gig. Those first three books make up the Crusader Epoch.
Concepts such as learning, soul searching, self-discovery form the primary theme of books four, five and six. It is a time of discovery. They comprise the Discovery Epoch.
The last three books tell of how our fearless crew have come of age, so to speak. They have at last embraced who and what they are. They have emerged from behind all façades to take their rightful places as themselves. Thus, these books form the Emergent Epoch.
Each Epoch of Odyssey is itself a trilogy. And there are three Epochs in the series. Thus, Odyssey of the Id is a trilogy of trilogies.
Incidentally, I could just as easily have used the word era for each of those separate trilogies. But frankly, in this context I like the word epoch more than era. The Crusader Epoch just sounds better than The Crusader Era. Besides, the setting of book five makes it very clear how and why the word epoch is really more appropriate. In fact, it was while working out the basics of that book that I got the idea to use epoch.
Book I, The Jupiter Garrison is finished and is currently in eBook format.
However, there remain considerable problems with any of the small business credit card processing services currently available. They are terribly unreliable and some have become notorious for seizing accounts without just cause. Further, the incredible amount of capital needed to maintain a merchant account with an actual bank currently makes it impossible for us to make credit card sales. Finally, the economy is so bad that eBooks are not selling very well right now.
Therefore, at this time we are pulling The Jupiter Garrison from the market until we can work out these problems. Meanwhile, the author continues development of the series. The current plan is to have Books 1, 2 & 4 ready before we reintroduce any of them to the market. Hopefully by that time the economy will have improved considerably.
